Portugal built the world’s first wave farm in order to create renewable energy. The total output of energy from the plant is estimated to power about 2,000 homes. Check out the article here for more details on how they accomplished this green friendly mission.

Some guy found this sword by using a metal detector around Harbour of the Sheaf Kings in Sweden. He went back with a slew of volunteers and dug this wonderful thing up. Apparently it dates back to early 16th-century. Check out the article here.

Coolhunting is featuring an installation by Jason Bruges where he uses wind-power to demonstrate that which President Bush seems to deny: alternate energy sources. One of the simplest solutions to this burning of too much coal is WIND!  Yay!  Well Jason does this amazing installation where these mini wind turbines power the LED’s as the wind moves through them creating this psychedelic patter in the night’s sky.  Check it out for yourself here.

NYC + Farms = Vertical Farming June 19, 2007

BBC posted an interesting article today on how Columbia University is proposing Vertical Farm Skyscrapers to be built within NYC. The whole concept would not only eliminate the cost of shipping, but would also add a “green” effect by eliminating the pollution caused from shipping. I think this would be an added bonus and truly make NYC unique in that manner. You can go about 20 minutes into Jersey and get produce cheaper than you can at your local bodega. Check out the article here.

This is a breath of fresh air in the whole green trend that’s slowly but surely picking up here in the US.  The whole concept behind the Green Project is to not just demolish what is left after the Hurricane in New Orleans, but to recycle components that are salvageable and therefore usable.   They have even started a recycled store  where they encourage the community to get involved with various projects involving cleaning up the environment in a practical manner.  See for yourself by clicking here.

An environmentally focused music festival called Hegyalja in Budapest spread the word by planting over 800 flowers in unused / run down areas of the city in an effort to promote the festival. They obviously did their job well, because it garnered major news coverage on both TV and local papers.

Scientists Discover Ring of Dark Matter May 15, 2007

We here at Le Douche have an interest in the universe and the basic theories behind how it started, how it works and how it is growing. With that being the case, we both found this particular article pretty awesome about how scientists feel they have found the best evidence to date on the existence of dark matter.

This got me thinking, how cool would it be to create a comic book superhero with the power to manipulate/control dark matter. What would make it so bad ass is that the character’s powers would evolve as scientists in the real world (i.e. where we live) gain a better understanding of the stuff. What would also be cool is as the comic book obviously become enormously popular, it would increase public interest and funding towards the study of dark matter. This is a good thing, people. When science wins, we all win.
