Che Guevara. Forty Years Dead. October 10, 2007
Posted by James in Politics.add a comment

I’ll admit to having a VERY base knowledge on who Che Guevara was and what he did. I’ll further admit that a large portion of what I (think I) know about the man is gleamed from watching “The Motorcycle Diaries.” The movie is amazing and inspiring, by the way. I’ve been wanting to read Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life by Jon Lee Anderson ever seeing the movie in an attempt to learn more but the daunting size of it as kept it on the back end (see also: heavy end) of my book shelf alongside Infinite Jest and Gravity’s Rainbow. Call me lazy. I deserve it.
That being said, I just read a piece from The Nation that spoke briefly about Guevara, the forty year anniversary of his death that happened this past Monday and his assassination led by the CIA. It’s a lot shorter than it could, and probably should have been but it’s worth reading, nevertheless. Check it out here.
Also, Democracy Now did a great piece on the anniversary during yesterday’s show. Being the giving folk that they are, they’ve posted the segment for free download. You can get it here.

Banning Bitch? August 7, 2007
Posted by loboz in Politics.1 comment so far

According to this article in the New York Times, the NYC council is trying to pass a city wide ban on the word BITCH, as they previously did with the N-word. The article claims that the word is “hateful and deeply sexist” as well as “creates a paradigm of shame and indignity for all women.”
I love how the city council is concerned about people calling each other bitches, but they can’t hire people to clean up the goddamn streets? There’s still a looming homeless population who they could employ with task such as PICKING UP TRASH, but they publicize their efforts of banning words. Not to mention, the dampening of FREEDOM OF SPEECH here. Sometimes I wonder if they even have their priorities straight. I’m sorry, but banning the B-word is not a major concern of mine, but cleaning up the environment and beautification of some of the trashiest parts of NYC neighborhoods seems to be more meaningful than not being able to say a word. What the hell? You can continue reading the bitchy article above, but trust me it’s frustrating.
Hippies in California = Terrorists July 16, 2007

Who would have thought that terrorists who help other terrorists wear tie-dye and live in Northern California? Definitely not I. I mean geeze, I thought all of those people wore hemp and said peace, but apparently not according to John. P. Walters / the D.E.A. They have set out to destroy all pot farms in Shasta County through “hard, dangerous work.” Righhhhhhht. And by that you mean they are rolling fresh “herbal” cigarettes on their breaks right? The best line in the whole article is “Don’t buy drugs. They fund violence and terror.” Ummmm what the hell are we doing in the middle east. Oh yeahhhh funding violence and terror as we blow a bunch of innocent civilians and their homes up. Great answer! Terrorists also put marijuana leaves on that poor innocent dog too….just saying.
No Bong Hits For Jesus… June 25, 2007

Remember that case where the student made a banner that said Bong Hits 4 Jesus on it and he got in trouble? Well his case has finally been settled by the highest of courts and what was the result? Basically they limited students first amendment by permitting censorship of any students speech that mentions drugs and has a pro-drug message. Freedom of speech my ass…..

YouTube Takes on the U.S. Military May 21, 2007

I just saw the below blurb from Digital Music News and thought it was pretty interesting. You may or may not have heard about it but the military has been systematically censoring outlets that allow for troops in Iraq to communicate and present content to the outside word. This has included YouTube, MySpace, ANY blogs and a host of other sites. The reasoning behind it has been that server bandwidth needs to be conserved and the age-old “our enemies are reading/watching” bullshit excuse.
I think a pretty strong argument could be posed that the military command structure is simply trying to censor our troops so the rest of the world doesn’t get a “genuine” portrayal of what’s going on. That’s just me. To fight such censorship can be an understandably risky move for any company but especially one that is as in the public eye as YouTube. I’m sure any number of “reporters” have “Why Does YouTube Hate America?” editorials ready to go. Who knows how big of a deal this will become or how far YouTube will be willing to go to fight this. Regardless, I commend them trying. (more…)

Check out this article I just ready about yet another hallmark George Bush quote. It’s almost as if he’s trying to trump the caricature of himself that he has developed into.

Bush: ‘I’m the Commander Guy’
WASHINGTON, May 2–And you thought he was still “the decider.”
President Bush coined a new nickname for himself — ‘’the commander guy” — on Wednesday, as he criticized Congressional Democrats in a speech to the annual gathering of the Associated General Contractors of America, a construction industry trade group.
The man who last year proclaimed “I’m the decider,’’ in response to a question about whether he would fire Donald Rumsfeld as defense secretary, came up with this latest moniker in explaining why he vetoed an Iraq war spending bill that dictated a timeline for troops to withdraw from Iraq. (more…)
